The Best book store in Maine!

Very disappointed in this bookstore! I am a local author and have two books which I would have liked to consign with them. One, a novel, actually takes place in the Belfast area. Nevertheless, I received a very unfriendly "No!"– they wouldn't even take a look at it, and the explanation given was that they don't take anything in consignment unless through their corporate distributor. Like many authors who self publish, this is not a good boding, since our best chance to distribute books, besides Amazon, are local bookstores. Yes, my books are controversial and offbeat. I know that, but places like "Left Bank" are doing the community a disservice by being so beholden to a corporate driven marketing program and booklist. It's no wonder that local booksellers are going extinct, posing as local and community based, all the while depending upon logarithm based marketing tools to stimulate sales. So, I would say that is their loss not to maintain a good relationship with local authors, and the lack of consideration and connection will only perpetuate the trend. Many bookstores in the past, especially in localities with strong literary traditions, built their business on the concept model of community-based and driven marketing, something like City Lights in San Francisco, Stone Soup in Boston, or Sherman's in Maine, which was thankfully willing to take 18 copies off my hands. So...I would say to the owners, please reconsider your policy, not for my sake and other independent authors, but for the sake of a venerable literary and booksellers tradition that keeps the door open for avant garde books that may elude the tastes of more traditional and conservative readers.

Great, comfy, intelligent bookstore

A bookstore is a place filled to the brim with hidden gems eager to be found by the curious reader. Unfortunately, both of my experiences visiting this book store have felt unwelcoming, unlike the books within (they do have a fair selection and well organized). Both times I visited, I went unacknowledged, the second time being the only customer in the store. I'd blame it on my quiet nature, but there was a bell that rang when I walked through the door. No hello, no goodbye, nothing in between. I know Belfast isn't known for its customer service, but I expected more from the bookstore.

Excellent, well-stocked, cozy little store. Friendly and helpful staff.
